Marketing research needs are extremely varied – depending equally on the specific features of a particular business and on the context in which these needs occur. We shall take them in turn, without however intending to be exhaustive in our presentation of existing situations.

Consumer behaviour

People are different. It is a fact. In private life, this is a delight (just imagine how predictable, therefore boring, a world full of identical people would be!). In business, this is an opportunity. In fact, this is the basis of modern marketing.

There is an amazing variety of people’s needs. Anybody who wishes to build on these needs will first of all have to understand the subtle mechanism that governs the relationship between these needs and the products or services s/he is selling. Therefore, you will start by understanding the motivations that govern consumption. In parallel, you will identify the target market – both physically (age, gender, income, etc.) and psychologically (needs, attitudes, lifestyle). Turning next to more practical matters, you will attempt to understand the consumption habits. You will be eager to know how, when, where, in what way and in what context, how often and in what quantities a particular product or service is used. Also, it is important to understand what are the main decision-making processes and what are the benefits sought in the marketed product or service.

And because people are different, to address everyone means, eventually, to address no-one. Therefore, it is important to divide the market into homogenous groups of people, either by their needs, attitudes, consumption or buying behaviour, lifestyle or benefits sought. A relevant segmentation of the population will help you individualise the offer so that it meets the needs of the target segment in a personalised and specific way.
